A short history of Latveria

Latveria is a small kingdom in the Carpathian Mountains of Eastern Europe, bordered to the south by Symkaria, the home of the mercenary Silver Sable. Its capital is Doomstadt, a mountain town once called Haasenstadt, which sits just north of the Kline River beneath Castle Doom. The castle was Castle Sabbat before Doom took it.

Victor von Doom was born in a Romani camp outside Haasenstadt, when the Romani were barely tolerated by Latveria's old rulers. He returned from America and Tibet as a grown man, overthrew the monarchy and crowned himself king (Fantastic Four Annual #2, 1964). The family he deposed, the Fortunovs, has spent decades trying to take the throne back: Prince Zorba Fortunov held it while Doom was away until Doom retook it in Fantastic Four #247 (1982), and Dimitri Fortunov tried again in Doctor Doom (2019–20).

Under Doom, Latveria is an absolute monarchy that its ruler calls benevolent. The streets are clean, the people are fed and the trains run, and robot guards watch every road. Kirby first showed the place properly in Fantastic Four #84–87 (1969), and John Byrne spent a whole issue following Doom through a day in his kingdom (Fantastic Four #258, 1983). Doom's subjects celebrate Doom's Day, and most of them, in most stories, seem to love him. Writers have rarely let readers be sure whether that love is real.

Latveria has had many rulers in Doom's absences, from the Red Skull to Reed Richards, who took the country after Doom was dragged to Hell (Fantastic Four vol. 3 #503, 2003). In One World Under Doom (2025) it became the seat of Doom's empire over the whole Earth. After his death, Thaddeus Ross occupied it and renamed it New America (Avengers: Armageddon, 2026), while Doom's will left his estate to Valeria Richards (The Will of Doom #1, 2025).
